The life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth is best understood through Martin Buber's philosophy of I-Thou encounter. Every significant gospel scene is, at its heart, a moment of genuine meeting--between Jesus and God, Jesus and individual human beings, and ultimately between the reader and the living Jesus. The book invites readers of any tradition to recognize and practice this kind of encounter in their own lives. The I-Thou regard is the only ground on which persons might learn, slowly, to be human together--across the borders that sort and divide them, across the systems that turn persons into things.
This book is for all readers--not only Christians. The book does not require the reader to become Christian. It presents Jesus as a model of I-Thou living available to all people of goodwill.
