Upon the sudden death of his mother, Jack Benton, her only child, returns home to help settle her affairs. Though close to his mother, Jack has been living in Berlin, immersed in his career as an international lawyer, and hasn't been home in two years. In a long letter that his mother left him, Jack learns for the first time stunning details about his father, who was a famous person in the Catholic world but whom Jack never knew. This sets Jack on a spiritual journey to reclaim his Catholic faith, and in the process he acquires a new family.
