Western Christians today can return to their roots and once again enjoy the excitement, simple spirituality, and explosive growth of early Christianity.In the early centuries Christianity was an explosive, viral movement that spread by word of mouth. Persecution could not stop it. In fact, it often helped to spread it. Slowly, Christianity morphed into something much different, a stable institutionalized religion that no longer spread in viral ways or gripped its practitioners with the excitement and spirituality of the early years.The excitement and passion can be recaptured. In fact, that is exactly what is happening today in places like China. In order to recapture what Western Christianity once had as a birthright, it must return to its early patterns, practices, and, most of all, to its pledge of allegiance: Jesus is Lord. By returning to what we once had, we can recover what we once enjoyed--vibrant, viral growth and deep spirituality and power.This will require a reengagement with Jesus himself, not merely through theological propositions but in vital yet simple practices that reconnect us to the living God and allow Him to lead us in an explosive movement of the gospel.
