After a slow start the Denver Broncos are in the thick of the NFL Playoff hunt. While many players have had a hand in the Broncos’ recent success, Denver has won 6 of the 7 games it has played since Tim Tebow took over as starting quarterback. Tebow’s style of play is unconventional and his numbers aren’t always impressive, but he consistently makes dramatic, game-winning plays in the fourth quarter and overtime. Tebow, a former college star and Heisman Trophy winner, has always been open about his Christian faith, making him a role model for many. But critics have accused the young quarterback of making a show of his religion. We’ll talk about the ways in which we, as Christians, publicly express our faith. Next Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Advent, and millions of people will be scrambling this week and next to find the perfect gifts for the people on their lists. While gift-giving has become a beloved Christmas tradition, shopping and making wish lists also can distract us from preparing our hearts and minds for Christ. If we aren’t careful, we might find that buying stuff and getting stuff have become more important to us than Christ. Next week we’ll talk about how we can stay focused on Jesus during this Advent and Christmas season and how Jesus frees us from the sin of materialism.
