On October 15 the Heene family of Colorado set off a frantic, large-scale search for their six-year-old son, Falcon, whom they alleged had climbed into their experimental weather balloon and was carried into the sky. Later that day the nation learned that Falcon had been safe inside the family’s home all along. And days later the nation also learned that the entire episode had been a hoax. The Heenes had taken advantage of a concerned public. LinC looks at the dangers of taking advantage of others and talks about how Jesus shows us a better way. December of that year will see the end of a cycle in the ancient Mayan calendar's "Long Count," and some speculate that the date will be met with widespread catastrophe and perhaps even the end of the world. Scripture says a lot about the end times, most importantly that the end—or culmination—of all things will be God's doing and will be for good. LinC reminds us that God will bring an end to death and suffering. Though we cannot know the "day or hour" (Mark 13:32), we can participate in Christ's work of bringing creation to its ultimate fulfillment by working to end pain and hopelessness today.
