One year ago gunmen in northwestern Pakistan attacked a school bus, shooting three school girls. One of the victims was then 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai. Even as a teen Yousafzai was known throughout Pakistan as an advocate for the education of women and girls. Since the attack (which she survived), Yousafzai has become a best-selling author and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. She continues her campaign for education and other rights for girls in developing nations. As Christians we must also support this cause. Paul tells us that all of God’s people—male and female—are one in Christ, and Peter envisioned a day when young men and women alike would be prophets of God’s Word. LinC joins the effort to advocate for all young people, especially girls in the developing world. Key Scriptures: Numbers 27:1-8; Mark 9:33-37; Acts 2:14-18. The National Basketball Association began its season this week. And Anthony Bennett, the top overall pick in this year’s draft, made his debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bennett recently revealed that he suffers from asthma and that his condition has affected his transition into the NBA. Nearly ten percent of children in the United States have asthma, and several high-profile athletes and entertainers have to manage the effects of the disease. Next week we’ll celebrate some of those people who have refused to allow asthma to hinder their success. We’ll also discuss times when we are exhausted, feel spiritually winded, and struggle to breathe in God’s Holy Spirit. How can we manage these situations so that we can once again breathe easy in God’s love?
