Where the Wild Things Are is the new movie based on Maurice Sendak’s popular and beloved children’s book. It tells the story of Max, a young boy who travels to an incredible island where he meets seven creatures called the Wild Things. The Wild Things, who are desperately in need of guidance, crown Max as their ruler and depend on him to bring order, peace, and stability to the island. LinC looks at whom and on what we depend and where we look for guidance and stability. Key Scriptures: Joshua 24:14-15, 19-22; Psalm 20; Matthew 11:28-30. Next Sunday is All Saints Day, a day we remember those Christians who have died during the past year. All Saints Day and Halloween have ties to the Celtic pagan holiday of Samhain. Instead of condemning Celts who held on to the Samhain tradition even after they converted to Christianity, the church reclaimed the festival as an opportunity to honor the saints, and a new tradition was born. Next week LinC looks at the role of tradition in Christianity and thinks critically about the origin and meaning of some of our sacred celebrations.
