The new film The Invention of Lying takes place in an alternate reality where everyone tells the truth until one man discovers that he can lie. In the movie’s world, the invention of lying also leads to the invention of religion. Some people of faith may be turned off by the movie’s dismissal of spirituality, but the film presents an opportunity to discuss the tough questions we have about God. This week LinC encourages youth to embrace and talk about the hard questions, because wrestling with doubt often results in a stronger faith. Key Scriptures: Job 13:1-16; Matthew 7:15-23; 2 Corinthians 13:5; 1 John 4:1-6. Where the Wild Things Are is the new movie based on Maurice Sendak’s popular and beloved children’s book. It tells the story of Max, a young boy who takes a boat to an incredible island where he meets seven creatures called the Wild Things. The Wild Things, who are desperately in need of guidance, crown Max as their ruler and depend on him to bring order, peace, and stability to the island. Next week LinC looks at whom and on what we depend and where we look for guidance and stability. We’ll discuss what it means to depend on God and how we, as God’s children and followers, can depend on one another.
