NBC’s popular singing competition, The Voice, returned to television this fall. The show’s celebrity judges (all talented vocalists in their own right) assess the contestant’s talents sight unseen, judging them solely on the quality of their singing voice, not on whether they look like stars. As Christians we affirm that all people, regardless of what they look like, have been specially crafted in God’s image. We must not allow appearance or bad first impressions to keep us from seeing the reflection of God in each person we encounter. The California legislature recently passed a law making it illegal to take photographs and videos of the children of celebrities. The law is aimed at paparazzi who harass the families of famous entertainers. Paparazzi are eager to obtain photos and footage of the children of the rich and famous because celebrity gossip is a big business. Gossip is big business throughout our culture, even if it doesn’t always pay top dollar. Many of us gossip or spread rumors to impress or gain approval from our peers; some of us are prideful about being “in the know.” Gossip can be devastating and can destroy relationships, even if it seems harmless when it leaves our mouths.
