Despite their many benefits (such as helping people mobilize following a disaster), social media services such as Facebook and Twitter have had a hand in intensifying the recent London riots and provoking flash-mob-related violence in Philadelphia. The recent incidents just go to show that most anything can be used for good or for bad. LinC looks at how we can make wise and holy choices about the resources and technology—including social media—that are available to us. Key Scriptures: 1 Kings 18:20-39; Psalm 46; 1 Corinthians 8:1-9; Hebrews 10:4-10, 19-25. Next Sunday is September 11, the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Time has not healed all wounds for those who lost family and loved ones. As we reflect on this dark moment in our nation’s history, we should also be in prayer for those places in the world that are experiencing death and destruction right now. Next week we’ll look back on 9/11 and also take a look at the drought and famine in East Africa that has already claimed the lives of 29,000 Somali children and has put 3.7 million people at risk of starving to death. As people who have experienced tragedy, we should reach out to others who suffer.
