YOLO, the acronymn for “you only live once,” has been floating around for a while and came to prominence when rapper Drake used it in his 2011 single “The Motto.” Since then #YOLO has become a popular slogan and Twitter hashtag. Actor Zac Efron even has the four letters tattooed on the side of his right hand. As Christians, we can affirm that we only live once, so to speak. But we also affirm that our one life is eternal and that while our lives may be everlasting, our mistakes are not. LinC talks about living once and forever and the hope that comes from the promise of everlasting life in Christ. Key Scriptures: Ecclesiastes 2:1-11; John 11:17-45; Ephesians 5:15-20. The 2012 Presidential election season begins in earnest later this month with the Republican National Convention. The Democratic National Convention follows one week later. The purpose of these conventions is not only to formally nominate each party’s candidate for president but also to create a party platform and to anoint the party’s presidential nominee as its standard bearer, or as the face of the party. Much as President Obama and Mitt Romney’s words and actions over the next few months will affect people’s views of the Democratic and Republican parties as a whole, our words and actions will affect people’s understanding of Christ. As Christians we have a platform of loving God and neighbor and following the teachings and example of Christ. And Jesus calls us to be standard bearers.
