On August 28, for the first time in history, an African American will accept a major party's nomination for the presidency of the United States. Not insignificantly, August 28 is also the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” speech, a landmark moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Regardless of our politics, it is important that we know our history and celebrate the lives and contributions of those who went before us. This week LinC looks specifically at our Christian history—telling the story of our faith and celebrating the work of the saints—and the importance of memory in faith formation. Key Scriptures: Genesis 9:8-17; Exodus 13:1-10; Luke 6:47-49; 11:14-20. According to virtually every economic indicator, the American economy is struggling. High food and energy prices, job losses, and home foreclosures have left many families in dismal financial straits. Everyone is looking for ways to save money and asking when (or if) things will begin looking up. Our faith does not exempt us from hard times, but it does offer valuable guidance for coping with them. Next week LinC looks at how to be faithful with the resources God has provided—even when times are tough.
