Nothing says summer in the church like vacation Bible school (VBS). For more than a century, churches have offered children’s educational programming in the summer. And, at many churches, this programming wouldn’t be possible without the help of youth volunteers. VBS is one of many ways in which the church educates its members. (LinC is another.) But Christian education is never just about teaching. It’s also about spiritual formation. LinC talks about the importance of having opportunities to learn, to ask questions, and to grow in faith with the support of our Christian classmates. Key Scriptures: Exodus 20: 1-17, 1 Samuel 3:1-9, Acts 8:26-39, Mark 10:17-22, Luke 2:41-52. YOLO, the acronymn for “you only live once,” has been floating around for a while and came to prominence when rapper Drake used it in his 2011 single “The Motto.” Since then #YOLO has become a popular slogan and Twitter hashtag. Actor Zac Efron even has the four letters tattooed on the side of his right hand. As Christians, we can affirm that we only live once, so to speak. But we also affirm that our one life is eternal and that while our lives may be everlasting, our mistakes are not. Next week, we’ll talk about living once and forever and the hope that comes from the promise of everlasting life in Christ.
