Pixar's Up, one of summer’s most critically acclaimed films, tells the story of an elderly man named Carl who (with the help of tens of thousands of helium balloons) finally realizes his lifelong dream of journeying to the exotic Paradise Falls in South America. A variety of circumstances kept Carl from embarking on this adventure earlier in life. As Christians we all are on a spiritual journey. But, as was the case for Carl in Up, circumstances arise that distract us. LinC looks at ways we can embark on our spiritual journeys with faith and excitement and with the Holy Spirit as our guide. Key Scriptures: Genesis 7:1-10; Psalm 139:1-18; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 2:8-20. This summer has seen an unusually large number of celebrity deaths, perhaps none more notable than pop-star Michael Jackson's. People around the world have celebrated Jackson's artistic contributions while uncomfortably remembering the singer's well-publicized flaws and eccentricities. Fans of football star Steve McNair likewise have had to balance celebrating the good while struggling with the bad. McNair's legacy as a hero on and off the football field was tarnished by the circumstances of his death. Next week LinC looks at the dangers both of turning our heroes into idols and of passing judgment on people whose flaws have been made public. We'll remember that every one of us is a sinner who stands in need of love and grace.
