The summer blockbuster Snow White and the Huntsman offers an unorthodox take on a familiar fairy tale. While Snow White is awakened by a kiss (as in other tellings of the story), she has more in common with Joan of Arc or The Hunger Games’ Katniss than with any tender, trilling cartoon character waiting around for her prince to come. In this version of the story, Snow White is a strong woman of virtue and valor. LinC reminds us that we meet many such women in Scripture. Some are queens and matriarchs; some are prophets; and some are commoners. But all exhibit a strength, purity, and beauty that all Christians—girls, boys, men, and women—should emulate. Key Scriptures: Proverbs 31:10-31; Judges 4; 1 Timothy 2:8-10. The novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Seth Grahame-Smith’s alternate history in which one of America’s most beloved presidents must preserve the union by ridding it of vampires, has spent much of the past couple years on the bestseller lists and has inspired a major motion picture. Though the premise seems absurd, the story deals with a subject that is hard to understand and that most would prefer to avoid: evil. As Christians we believe in the reality of evil and its effects on our world. Next week LinC talks about how God calls us to respond to evil with love and the message of God’s grace through Jesus Christ.
