Gridlock in Washington and the inability of different parties, different branches of government, and different houses of Congress to compromise for the good of the country has been an ongoing story over the past several months. While it’s frustrating to watch our elected leaders struggle to work together, government officials aren’t the only ones who are guilty of letting petty disagreements get in the way of serving those whom they are called to serve. We often have the same problem in the church. Disagreements over everything from our understanding of atonement to the color of the carpet in the fellowship hall distract us from making disciples and offering God’s love to a hurting world. Superman returns to the big screen this summer with Man of Steel, director Zack Snyder’s fresh take on the classic superhero. In every Superman story the Man of Steel uses his considerable powers to change the world in positive ways. As Christians we have a similar charge. We may not have the powers of flight, super-speed, and heat vision, but we have other powers that are just as effective. Next week we’ll look at how we can draw on the Holy Spirit to change our world according to God’s will.
