X-Men: First Class explores the origins of Professor Charles Xavier’s team of specially trained mutants against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. Mutants in the Marvel Universe have special genetic traits, and mutants who train with Professor Xavier have been set apart to use their abilities for the benefit of humanity. As members of God’s new creation, the church, we also have been set apart for a special purpose. LinC examines what it means to be set apart and talks about how we can claim our identity, gifts, and mission as members of Christ’s church. Key Scriptures: Luke 10:17-24; Romans 12:3-8; 1 Peter 2:4-10. It's been a season of disasters. Next week we’ll look at the tornado that struck last month in Joplin, Missouri, causing the deaths of 141 people and untold destruction. Such disasters cause many people to ask, “Why would God allow something like this?” or “Where is God amid all this suffering?” LinC will look at ways we can see God’s love and mercy at work, even in the midst of human suffering.
