The recent Mississippi River floods are among the worst disasters caused by the Mighty Mississippi in the past century. As storms drenched the Mississippi Valley in April, the Army Corps of Engineers had to make some tough choices. In some places, blasting a hole in a levee or opening a floodgate would flood hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland or marsh but would keep the floodwaters from wiping out entire towns. In other words, the Corps had to choose the best of two really bad options. We may also find ourselves in situations where we have no good options. After all, we live in a sinful, broken world. LinC looks at how we can turn to God for guidance when we face impossible situations. Key Scriptures: Genesis 22:1-14; 1 Kings 3:5-28; Matthew 5:1-15; Luke 13:1-5 X-Men: First Class explores the origins of Professor Charles Xavier’s team of specially trained mutants against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. Mutants in the Marvel Universe have special genetic traits, and mutants who train with Professor Xavier have been set apart to use their abilities for the benefit of humanity. As members of God’s new creation, the church, we also have been set apart for a special purpose. Next week we’ll examine what it means to be set apart and discuss how we can claim our identity, gifts, and mission as members of Christ’s church.
