As the school year winds down, many students will be taking a break from studying for finals, making prom arrangements, and battling spring fever to attend awards banquets. Athletic departments, music departments, theater departments, honor societies, and school newspaper and yearbook staffs will celebrate the accomplishments of the students who participate in these activities with catered meals and well-rehearsed speeches. For those who strive for awards and recognitions, award-banquet season may be the highlight of the school year. LinC talks about how we strive for recognition—not the sort of recognition we celebrate at award banquets—but heavenly recognition. Key Scriptures: Exodus 1:8-22; Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21; James 1:2-13. In the wake of a tragedy such as the ones that struck last week in the Boston area and the town of West, Texas, certain questions arise: How do we, and especially those closest to the event, move forward? Where was God in all of this? How should we feel about this? Can we protect ourselves and keep this from happening again? Next week LinC explores how we as Christians respond to disaster and tragedy when it is happening, when we see it coming, and during its aftermath. We’ll talk about how God is at work even as we’re asking God, “Why?” And we’ll consider that one way God is present with victims of disaster is through us.
