Actor Charlie Sheen has dominated entertainment news headlines in recent weeks with strange and outrageous quotes and attacks on the creator of his hit show. Among other things, Sheen has made disparaging remarks about recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and has suggested that he can get better on his own. This I-don’t-need-help attitude, which is not unique to Charlie Sheen, can have damaging effects on people’s lives. As Christians we know that we do need help, particularly from God, whom we depend on every day. This week LinC looks at how to live as people dependent on God. Key Scriptures: Exodus 14:10-25; Matthew 6:5-15; 7:24-27; Acts 2:42-47. In the new thriller The Adjustment Bureau, a team of fedora-clad “adjusters” secretly manipulate people and events to enforce a grand plan for history and humanity written by an unseen “Chairman.” The Chairman is all-powerful and all-knowing, but is also a micromanager and (some might argue) a tyrant. So how is God, whom we know has a grand plan for us, different from this Chairman? Next week LinC looks at God’s plan for history and humanity and God’s major “adjustment” to this plan. We’ll also discuss how, unlike the characters in The Adjustment Bureau, we are much more than God’s puppets. Through Christ, we are God’s children and friends.
