January 8 is the first Sunday after Epiphany, the day on which we commemorate the visit of the magi. The word epiphany refers to a sudden awareness or insight. Scientists think they may be on the verge of an epiphany. Researchers at CERN in Switzerland believe they are one step closer to finding the Higgs boson particle, sometimes called the “God particle,” which is responsible for giving matter mass. LinC looks at how science can help us better appreciate the magnitude of all that God has created. Key Scriptures: Psalm 8; Proverbs 8:22-31; Matthew 2:1-12. Next Sunday is the eve of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This will be the first MLK Day since the new King Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C., and it coincides with the run of The Mountaintop, a Broadway play about the events of the evening before King's death. The National Corporation for Community Service is calling Americans to celebrate the holiday by finding ways to serve others. Next week we’ll help youth find ways they can serve on MLK Day. We’ll look at why service is integral to our Christian faith. And we’ll discuss why God calls us to serve our neighbors and how we encounter Christ when we minister to others.
