David Buttrick believes that preaching on the parables is a tricky, exciting craft, for he does not view them as helpful wisdom for daily living or as good stories for narrative preaching. In Part I, he provides a general introduction to parables and discusses basic homiletical issues and problems—including parables, designing sermons, and choosing illustrations. In Part 2, he comments on 33 parables, providing new translations, brief surveys of scholarship, and suggestions with regard to preaching each of the parables. He includes and analyzes his own sermons on many of the parables. A provocative, readable, and helpful guide to preaching the parables, this volume will appeal to both pastors and students.
