The Politics of Ancient Israel is a reconstruction of the political life of ancient Israel within the environment of the ancient Near East. Gottwald questions the view that the primary factor influencing Israel’s political evolution was religion, and then moves into a discussion of the matrix of ancient Near Eastern politics and how Israel and Judah functioned within it.
