From the earliest evidence of civilization in Palestine to the rise of the Christian Church, the HarperCollins Atlas of Bible History places the whole of biblical history in its geographical and historical context. More than two hundred full-color maps, detailed biblical references, timelines, and expert commentary make this the most comprehensive and up to date Bible atlas available. Edited by Professor James Pritchard, one of the world's most distinguished archaeologists, this superlative reference work is an invaluable tool for those who want to more fully appreciate and understand the stories of the Bible.
James Pritchard (1909-1997) was an eminent Biblical archaeologist who excavated some of the major sites of the ancient Near East. He was professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as the director of their University Museum. His published works include: The HarperCollins Atlas of the Bible; The Ancient Near East Texts; Gibeon, Where the Sun Stood Still; and Recovering Sarepta, a Phoenician City. He was awarded a medal from King Hussein of Jordan for the achievements made during his seven excavations there; the gold medal of the Archaeologists Institute of America, where he was once president; the Franklin Medal of the American Philosophical Society; and the 500th Anniversary medallion of the University of Uppsala in Sweden.
A volume that will reward the scholar but be accessible to the educated layperson. And the trove of artworks, maps, and photographs make it a pleasure just to flip the pages.
