Text: Picture cattle stalls in a stable. Straw is scattered on the floor providing bedding when one of the animals wants to lay down. Other straw is placed in a manger nearby for food. This ordinary scene could be found many places in the little town of Bethlehem.
In a nearby stall, though, there was a sharp contrast. A young man and woman are catching their breath after an exhausting but wonderful event. She had given birth to a wonderful child. It was perhaps not the first birth that has occurred there. Sheep or other animals might have brought forth young in this place. But a human birth is so different. There were some of the same pains in the process and a sense of relief when it was over. But a human birth holds such a wonderful promise and this particular child was special.
To be sure, every child is special. It seems like a miracle suddenly to have a brand new life in our midst. The little body with wrinkled skin is a person. A loud cry lets us know it is fully alive. This baby was even more, because he has a potential that went beyond any other human who has ever lived. He embodied a divine quality in an outstanding way, the living embodiment of the God of all ages. Scripture tells us "God was in Christ".
The result is that the ordinariness of this stable was transformed into something extraordinary. The hope that comes with every childbirth here became a joy for all the world. As the angel said to shepherds nearby. " I bring you good new of great joy for all people to you is born this day a Savior who is Christ, the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11)
Through this little baby, as he grew into adulthood, all of us can find ourselves changed. Our ordinariness is transformed. Our lives gain an element of holiness. WE, in turn, can transform our world through fulfilling our own divine calling, sharing with others what we have received and helping to make their world special.
