Little, metal cars, two for a dollar, were regular purchases by the Cross boys. They would peruse the store racks, searching for cars with the right color, design, and wheels.
How quickly little metal cars can get misplaced when used by boys ages three and six! “Can you help me find my car?” I would see dozens of cars on the floor, scattered like barefoot booby traps. “How about one of these?” I would naively offer. “No. I need the red one, with the silver and black wire wheels that curve and a gold dot in the center.” I would usually get as far as “red one” and start culling out the cars, knowing in my heart that it would be nowhere in plain sight.
Under cushions, in the kitchen, behind the couch, under the pillow on the bed, and finally the search would turn up the exact little car being hunted. All would be well until the next round.
What will it take for us to be as specific in seeking wisdom as my boys were in searching for their little, metal cars? To spend our energy and focus in life searching for that God-given benefit is an effort of faith as the followers of Christ. We will spend time today with the Book of Proverbs, searching for that gift of God.
