Many of us as children learned a little “action” song in Sunday school that required the use of our hands as well as of our voices. The song, “This Little Light of Mine,” has a simple tune; and the song has many stanzas. Do you remember the stanza “Put it under a bushel? No! I’m going to let it shine!”? How about “Won’t let Satan blow it out! I’m going to let it shine!”? That was a favorite for me as a child because I often literally blew rather than singing the word blow.
The song is an African American spiritual; its words came from a people who were looking for a light to lead them out of the darkness of their slavery. They believed that God would lead them by the light of Christ. In the face of hardships, they were determined to keep the light of Christ burning. That lends an air of poignancy to the stanza of this song —“All through the night I’m goin’-a let it shine.”—don’t you think?
Why is light such a vivid metaphor for the presence of Christ?
