Two weeks before Michelle and James’ wedding date, a young woman accused James of committing a violent crime on the night of his bachelor’s party. The bride, however, reared as a Christian, chose to believe that God would redeem their lives in the midst of this tragedy. She remained steadfast in her love for her groom. Michelle dared to trust that good would come out of the dilemma and proceeded with her wedding plans.
In spite of the threat of a long jail sentence and separation from each other, the accused and his bride publicly declared their intention to be married. The couple’s trust survived the crisis and grew. What could have been a divisive and tragic event became a beautiful demonstration of love.
Michelle’s commitment to her groom illustrates God’s faithfulness to us. Much as Michelle chose to love James, regardless of what he may have done, God offers us mercy rather than judgment. God’s saving purpose overrides God’s just complaint against us and frees us from condemnation. Thus, with Paul, we celebrate “the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith” (Romans 1:16). Imagine the gratitude James felt toward his bride for standing beside him.
