Home field advantage is a very real factor in sports competition. Sports teams tend to have a much higher winning percentage at home than on the road. The home court or home field advantage becomes especially important during playoff time.
In our Bible Lesson, Elijah initiated a religious competition; but rather than seek a “home field advantage,” he did everything in his power to assure that he did not have one. He purposely skewed the conditions of the contest so that they overwhelmingly favored his opponents. He did not want anyone to be able to complain that they were treated unfairly or to cast doubt on the reality of the Lord’s triumph when it came. Elijah had such trust in God’s power that he knew he could depend on God regardless of the circumstances.
