It was the Saturday before Easter; our family was in the Old Salem section of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to attend the next morning’s Easter sunrise service—the oldest in continuous existence in the United States. In keeping with longstanding tradition, Moravian community members spent much of Saturday cleaning every gravestone in the cemetery where Sunday’s sunrise service would conclude. With gravestones cleaned and glistening in the sunlight, the members proceeded to the Moravian church for a love feast service.
We stood near the church doors to view the interior before the afternoon service began. An usher greeted us and asked if we would like to attend the service. We were concerned we looked like tourists and uncertain our preschool daughter would sit through the service. He smiled, assured us we were welcome, and guided us to
a wonderful childcare room with a staff to match. We accepted the invitation and participated in
a joyful and meaningful worship experience that remains among our fondest memories.
In sad contrast we discovered that on a recent Sunday, a member of our congregation brusquely told a visitor, “Please move; you’re in my pew.” Then I remembered how I felt when an “Easter-only attender” arrived late and crowded into my already cramped pew.
This lesson invites us to look below that surface and into our hearts.
