As a pastor in local churches for more than twenty years, I came to see a pattern of behavior among families who experienced the death of a loved one. As we planned funerals or other celebrations of life, I realized I could quickly distinguish the families who had “a deep well” from those who did not. Those family members who worshiped God regularly and who had experienced faith-growing events in their lives—the “deep well” folks—approached the death of their loved one far differently than those persons who had nothing to draw from spiritually in their lives. The deep well folks still felt profound grief and loss and sadness, but they also expressed trust in God’s love and hope in Christ and faith in eternal life. However, families who had no real firsthand experience of faith and spiritual expression were often devastated by death and unable to be consoled; or they felt no emotion at all. Those funerals were memorable for what was missing: a sense of hope and eternal joy.
This lesson, we will have the opportunity to hear and see again God’s answer to suffering and death: The answer is “new life.”
