When I was in high school, we sometimes ended an evening with a drive to Crosby’s. If there was a new member in our group of dating couples, a visit to Crosby’s was all the more interesting because Crosby’s was our well-kept secret.
For a first timer, the secret of Crosby’s began to be revealed as we entered one of El Paso’s oldest cemeteries and pulled up to a small structure with an iron grillwork gate. Behind the gate were the above ground graves of the Crosby family. The ritual called for one male and one female to stand by the Crosby building while the rest of the group drove away with the promise to return in fifteen minutes. The two people who remained in the cemetery were not a “couple,” guaranteeing two advocates for the return transportation to pick them up.
Standing in front of the burial site drew a variety of emotions and conversations. Often there was nervous laughter and an element of fright; but talk invariably moved to deeper levels, wondering about the members of the Crosby family and their hopes and dreams.
In some ways, I have never outgrown my teenage fascination with the Crosbys. Over the years, I have stood with many families in many cemeteries, sharing their grief, as well as their hopes and dreams. Rarely have I left a cemetery without trying to experience personally and deeply the thoughts and emotions of persons who are buried there. What do you experience in a cemetery?
