A man tells this story about his conversion to Christ:
I’m a big guy, and I have always been pretty good with my fists. One night in a bar fight, I punched a man and he died. That landed me in prison for seven years. The first night out of the slammer, I still felt like I could take on anything, and I got very drunk. In the middle of the night, I found myself stumbling across a field; and then I fell down. When I tried to get up, I couldn’t. All at once, I heard a voice ask me, “What now, little man?” But there was nobody around. It finally dawned on me that maybe it was God speaking. I’d never been a churchgoer, but I tried to pray. When I was finally able to get up, something had changed. I became a Christian that night.
Now consider this account from another man:
My parents were Christians. I can’t point to any specific time that I became a Christian. It seems as if I always have been. They took me to church from the time I was born; and when they told me about Jesus, I believed them. Oh, I went through a period of questioning my religion when I was in college; but I was just moving from my childish understanding of Christ to a more mature one. I am more committed to Christ today than ever.
Both of those men became pastors, but the first seemed the less likely candidate to be a servant of Christ. In our Bible Lesson the apostle Paul revealed what an unlikely candidate he was for that role, but Christ’s servant is exactly what he became.
