Five senior high youth returned from church camp and were sharing their experiences with the adult class whose support had helped them attend camp. There were accounts of the speakers and the Bible studies. Then Heather announced that she had received and responded to a call to ordained ministry. Almost at once several class members began to remind Heather that she was certain to be her class valedictorian, that top colleges were recruiting her, and that everyone was assuming she would one day head up the family architectural firm. All remarks were prefaced with something like, “It must have been a wonderful week at camp, but now that you’re back here....”
Heather seemed stunned until Fred, a respected member of the class, spoke up. “Heather, the class means well; but they said the same things to me. After my retirement I spent the first month on a mission service project and then agreed to go around the conference raising additional funds for the project. Folks would say, ‘Fred, is this really how you want to spend your retirement?’ Heather, I don’t know what God has in mind for you; but I know God gave you wonderful gifts, and you are listening to find God’s purpose for your life. Know that we support you as you respond to God’s call.”
As we shall see, God calls each of us to service.
