This image gave hope to slaves in America as they dreamed of the day when they would be free to leave their chains behind and climb the ladder to a new existence. Our Bible Lesson invites us to look closely at the event that inspired the writer of this song. When we do, the ladder becomes less significant. The story is not about climbing a ladder to heaven. It is about fleeing the consequences of bad behavior, traveling to a different land, hearing God’s promises that will not let us go, and being given the opportunity to respond to those promises. Climbing Jacob’s ladder? Nope. This is not a story of us seeking God but of God seeking us.
