We human beings need second chances. I have never known anyone so successful, so intelligent, so achieving, that he or she did not need a second chance.
I am not certain when our second chances begin. Perhaps they start in the womb. One of our earliest second chances comes with learning to walk. If nature had said, “You get one chance to walk upright,” the whole world would be sitting on its bottom. Thank God, we get second chances—thousands of them.
If second chances are important when it comes to walking, eating with dignity, and operating a computer, they are even more important in matters of the spirit. It is in our relationship with God and, under God, with our fellow humans, that we are put to the test and where our need for second chances is most necessary. Our God is a God of the second chance. God’s grace creates opportunities for us to begin again. The point is made dramatically in the memorable story of Noah and the Flood.
