I earned a “D” in writing in the first half of fourth grade. (“Randy will do much better if he will just slow down,” my teacher said.) The hated tests consisted of ten lines of carefully scribbled cursive writing, then red-ink corrected by our teacher, Miss Evans.
One March morning we sat with sharpened pencils as Miss Evans unveiled the newest ordeal to be copied. Knowing it was hopeless, I quickly wrote the lines down; turned the page in; and then went on to more interesting pursuits, like reading or social studies.
A few days later Miss Evans read the list of students to receive the “Good Writing Award” for that week. Imagine my shock when she took a breath and read, “Randy Cross” out loud before God and everyone! Thinking she had made a mistake, I almost demanded a recount. But before I could do so, she presented me with the “Good Writing Award,” with “Miss Evans” signed at the bottom of the certificate.
At that moment I understood “glory and honor.” It came on a piece of paper, with my name printed neatly on it and with Miss Evans smiling at me and saying, “Good job, Randy.” I still have that precious award almost forty years later.
Hopefully, we all have had experiences and understandings of glory and honor in our lives. As people of faith, let us see how our Bible Lesson from Psalm 8 can inform our understanding as we affirm these gifts of God.
