When I hear someone talk about a “starter home,” I realize what a different world I grew up in. Young people now expect to have a home of their own while they are still quite young, perhaps even when they return from their honeymoon—but just a “starter,” from which before long they will progress to something better. By contrast, I remember my mother dreaming for long years about “the little bungalow” she hoped she and my father would someday have. And they did, but not until they were nearly sixty years old.
Home is a wonderful dream, and the fact that this dream is now more easily attained than in my parents’ day does not diminish its ultimate beauty. Yet there is always a minor chord in our songs about home because we know our homes are never permanent. We see the evidence in television news, as survivors of fire or flood look at what was once their home and ponder starting again. Others feel the same pain when a change in health, employment, or relationship requires moving from the house they love.
We have no permanent dwelling place on this earth. No wonder, then, that something in every human soul longs for a home that is secure. Our Bible Lesson opens to us the beauty of a home with God.
