Everybody loves to be flattered. I do. Samuel Clemens once said that he could go for two weeks on the strength of a good compliment. Pay me a compliment, and chances are you can be my friend. As the old joke says, “Flattery will get you
everywhere.”
Still, we do well to beware of flatterers. Flattery can deceive us about a person’s real motivations. We are apt to overlook the faults of someone who has just done us the honor of complimenting us.
Nicodemus came to Jesus in the night, speaking complimentary words. “Rabbi,” he said, “we know that you are a teacher who has come from God” (John 3:2). Jesus ignored the flattery, however. He spoke directly, without the slightest acknowledgment of the compliment. “No one,” he said, “can see the kingdom of God without being born from above” (3:3).
