We sometimes have our lives mapped out in a particular way. We will marry the right person. We will have the requisite number of children. They will go to the right schools and do well. We will have wonderful weddings and family get-togethers.
Things happen, however. Death and divorce occur. Catastrophes overwhelm us. Our children may turn out to be different persons than we expected; and then, when they are grown, they may bring home who knows what kind of spouse to be a part of the family. The new in-laws may have strange accents. They may not be whom we would have picked. Sometimes things do not go according to plan.
So we grieve. We grieve not only for the loss of persons we thought would be with us forever, we grieve for the loss of our well-ordered lives. All these strangers, who were never a part of the plan, end up intruding in our lives.
Naomi lost her husband. She lost her two sons. All she had left was a daughter-in-law, and a Moabite one at that! This could not possibly have been what she had anticipated as a young woman.
