My parents reared me in an atmosphere of trust and respect. I knew what my parents expected of me and what I could expect from them. As a result, I was an obedient child. Violating my parents’ will would have threatened my sense of well-being.
Over the years, I developed my own opinions and direction. Having come to know God through Jesus Christ, I surrendered my life to God. As a result, I sought to follow Jesus’ teaching and example. I was even more diligent in serving Christ than I had been in respecting my parents’ authority.
The single most difficult teaching that my mother had ingrained in me, however, remained important: “Love everyone.” I found that no matter how hard I tried, I could not. Though I understood my duty, I could not honestly feel unconditional compassion and kindness toward people who were markedly different from me.
A personal crisis forced me to deal with the limits of my ability to love. At the age of nineteen, I asked God to help me love someone dear to me whom I could not love sufficiently.
Having admitted what I could not do, this prayer transformed me. My faith was no longer about me and my effort to obey God. Now, by the Spirit, God was empowering me to love as God loves. With this gift came new peace and joy.
