Whose star is this?
It has beauty. It has mystery. It calms us. It lures us. We wish upon it. We watch its steadfastness, while clouds pass over its face and hide it, but we know it will return. A star shines brightly in the heavens.
Can “wise men” (or women) claim it as theirs? Years ago, wise men saw a new star and had wisdom enough to follow its course. Their knowledge, though, lays no more claim to the star than a child might have, walking out on a clear night and spotting it in the sky. Even to the wise, a star is a mystery. Our knowledge of it is far dimmer than its rays that reach out to us.
Can the powerful or might claim it? Does a soldier control it or can a merchant sell it? No! They cannot prevent travelers or shepherds or even beggars from enjoying its beauty.
Whose star is this? Its owner is the God who created it, but God shares it with us, just as God shares all of life with us. Artists often portray the beams of the Christmas star as a cross, heralding Jesus as the light of the world. It is God, in Christ, who is our guide, our inner call, our destiny.
In this portrayal, the trumpeter on the rooftop sounds forth the glad news that God has come to everyone. Like a star, God’s good tidings are still a mystery, but their light shines clearly and drives away the shadows that often trouble us.
