This week LinC looks at the story of a church in Connecticut whose fierce opposition to the death penalty was tested recently when three members of the congregation were brutally murdered. Without debating how this congregation should respond to this sad and complex situation, we will explore ways to think theologically about the larger issue of capital punishment, taking into consideration Scripture and the teachings of the church. Key Scriptures: Genesis 4:1-16; Numbers 35:9-34; Matthew 18:21-22; Romans 12:17-21; 1 John 3:11-15. Some Christian groups are concerned that the much-anticipated movie The Golden Compass, based on the first novel in Philip Pullman's popular His Dark Materials series, will give young moviegoers negative impressions of God and faith. While Pullman doesn't hide his contempt for religion, some readers have found themes in his stories that Christians can embrace (despite the author's intentions). Next week LinC looks at how Christians can be discerning consumers of all forms of entertainment.
