Fox’s new comedy Glee made a big splash earlier this month with more than seven million viewers tuning in for the first regular episode and numerous glowing reviews from critics. The show, which chronicles an upstart high school glee club, is a humorous take on the high school “caste system” and its tendency to label people as “winners” and “losers.” (The L-shaped hand-on-forehead sign is even part of the show’s logo.) LinC uses Glee to discuss what Scripture has to say about winners and losers and how castes and cliques have no place in God’s kingdom. Key Scriptures: 1 Samuel 2:1-10; Luke 1:46-55; 19:1-10; Galatians 2:19b-20; James 2:1-9. Following Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the recent MTV Video Music Awards, Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s address about health care, and tennis star Serena Williams’s tirade during the U.S. Open, USA Today asked, “What happened to civility?" Good question. Next week LinC examines the lost art of civility. We’ll look at ways we can prepare ourselves to act civilly, respectfully, and faithfully in all circumstances.
