The Concise Guide for Congregational Care

Words to Use in Every Setting
  • By Melissa Collier Gepford
Product Description

An essential resource for pastors, care ministers, chaplains, and anyone else who provides spiritual care for people in hospital, hospice, or home settings.

This small book is a go-to resource for Congregational Care Ministers as they perform their tasks--caring for people in their congregation and community. People who serve in the Congregational Care Ministry context (as set forth in the books by Lampe & Gepford) are the primary audience. But the content will be useful to others, too. Thus, pastors and others who provide care for people may also use this book and are a secondary audience.

This Take-Along Guide includes key points from the Congregational Care Minister’s Manual, by Lampe & Gepford. This material includes important procedures, talking points for specific situations, plus prayers and scripture passages.

A minimum of 50% of the material in the Take-Along Guide is different from the Manual. This includes additional prayers, short quotes from other resources, hymn lyrics, and poetry for CCM’s to share with people during home and hospital visits, for instance. The new material includes prayers and other helps for unusual and challenging circumstances; see the Table of Contents for examples.

The Take-Along Guide makes a wonderful gift for newly trained CCM’s. Churches could buy quantities to present at their CCM commissioning services each year.

What is the difference between the Congregational Care Minister’s Manual and this Take-Along Guide for Congregational Care?

The Manual is a book about how to fulfill the role of Congregational Care Minister, and includes a wide array of instruction, tools, and resources. It also serves as the CCM’s workbook. Some CCM’s will carry the Manual with them during their times of service, especially during the first year. Example: A CCM might prepare for a hospice visit from the parking lot by reading a ‘procedures’ segment from this book.

The Take-Along Guide is a more easily totable resource, providing a deeper well of content such as prayers and scripture passages CCM’s use while they are serving in their ministry roles. Example: Once inside the hospice care room, the CCM might sit next to the patient, open this small book, and read a passage of scripture or a prayer.
