Highly accessible and clearly composed, this anthem will be enjoyed by your adult women. Soprano solo presents the refrain, adorned with minimal ornamentation. Stanza 1, singing of personal troubles, remains in the solo voice with a response offered by divided women. The next refrain gives the text to the soloist with unison “mm” below. Measures 27-30 dismiss the choral part and add ornamentation. Stanza 2, set for SSA, sings of the future hope in glory. The refrain completes the arrangement.
The accompaniment incorporates colorful chords with bent tones, illustrating the blues of the text. Rhythmic interjections prevent stagnation of the slow moving tempo. The choral parts are similar in range with the exception of the lower alto pitches.
Performance options include using the solo ornamentation as a guide to your own improvisational ideas. The suggestions are good but do not feel locked into this. Give your soloist the freedom to bring her own creativity to the product.
