The 2008 Youth VBS program takes participants on a journey through time. The centerpiece of this program in the 1960s, a time of change and idealism—a time when issues of justice and equality were paramount. Themes include answering God’s call, kindness, forgiveness, boldness, and belief. Participants will study a Scripture, a “1960s cultural connection,” and a current-day connection related to each theme. Scriptures and 1960s cultural connections include:
- Answering God’s Call: Gideon’s call (Judges 6:11–7:21); the Peace Corps
- Kindness: David’s kindness to Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-11); Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity
- Forgiveness: The parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18:23-35); the Civil Rights Movement
- Boldness: Jesus heals the hemorrhaging woman (Luke 8:40-48); César Chávez and the farm workers’ movement
- Belief: Jesus and Thomas (John 20:24-29); the Jesus People
