Margaret Bonner is in her early thirties, an Anglican minister's daughter, and like her late father, also a minister in a small southern town. Her husband Adrian is much older; once her father's disciple, he serves as chaplain and acting headmaster of a boarding school for disturbed children. Their marriage is in trouble, and Margaret is thinking of leaving him when three rather unwelcome people come into their lives. The chaos they bring with them will ultimately lead Margaret and Adrian back to each other.
Beautifully written and filled with the insight and compassion Godwin is known for, "Evensong" is a novel about family, the sometimes uncomfortable bonds of marriage, and the quest for religious faith.
