We are human and limited, trying to understand that which is divine and limitless. We have trouble enough comprehending what we can see, but we can be totally confounded by that which is beyond seeing. We think in terms of time and place; God is eternal and unlimited by space. We know there is more; and so we sing what is both a hymn and a prayer: “Open my eyes, that I may see?/?glimpses of truth thou hast for me; /?place in my hands the wonderful key?/?that shall unclasp and set me free.”1
Perhaps as we pray those words, we discover we have uttered part of the answer we are seeking. (God sometimes works that way!) We cannot comprehend all truth; but if our spiritual eyes are opened, God does grant us “glimpses of truth.”
Throughout the Bible we catch “glimpses of truth” as we read, guided by the Holy Spirit. Within Jesus’ teachings, we are given some of our fullest “glimpses of truth” through parables. Drawing on that which is familiar, Jesus made plain what was otherwise hard to comprehend. Sometimes a parable answers one question only to raise others, but even those questions may offer “glimpses of truth.” A parable can be the “wonderful key” that sets us free.
Unfortunately, there are also times when we do not want to open our eyes.
