A preacher’s story tells of an English clergyman who preached on stewardship using the stick-up man’s famous line, “Your money or your life.” In response, the choir’s anthem for the day was “Take My Life.”
That is where the Corinthian church was, and it may be where we are. It seems that many people are ready to do everything they can for Christ except give generously of their financial resources. Stewardship is often the last dimension of our faith experience to be developed. However, it really should be a top priority because sacrificial giving can open the door to a vital, growing faith.
Giving is a response to the grace with which God has blessed us. Today’s lesson helps us to recognize that our giving bears witness to our experience of grace as we share God’s blessings with others. Paul reminds us that God gives us both the money to give and the spirit with which to give it. He teaches us that the gifts we give not only help others but also strengthen our relationship with God. Everybody wins when we become “cheerful giver[s]” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
